On 4th October 2024, a comprehensive HIV/AIDS Awareness Program was organized by the
Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS) in collaboration with the Red Ribbon Club of Sikkim
Government College, Namchi. The event was aimed at raising awareness about HIV/AIDS among
students and the broader community to promote understanding and reduce stigma surrounding
the disease.
The program featured two key speakers: Dr. Meesho Chettri and Dr. Ganesh Rai, both highly
esteemed professionals in the field of healthcare and public health. They shared their expertise
and insights regarding HIV/AIDS, focusing on the prevention, treatment, and the importance of
public awareness.
Opening Session
The event began with a brief introduction to HIV/AIDS, its causes, transmission methods, and
preventive measures. Dr. Ganesh Rai discussed the history of the disease, highlighting the global
and national impact of HIV/AIDS. He emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and
consistent treatment to improve the quality of life for individuals living with HIV. He also touched
on the available resources and facilities provided by the government and local health bodies like
SSACS to support those affected.
Question and Answer Session
Following the introductory session, an interactive question-and-answer segment was held, where
students and faculty actively participated by asking pertinent questions regarding HIV/AIDS
which was facilitated by Dr. Meesho Chettri and Dr Ganesh Rai. They addressed several
misconceptions and myths associated with HIV/AIDS and provided clear, factual information
about the ways the virus is transmitted and how it can be prevented.
Both speakers emphasized that awareness is the first step toward eliminating the spread of HIV
and creating a supportive environment for those affected by the disease.
Conclusion
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from the Red Ribbon Club coordinators, who
appreciated the efforts of SSACS and the guest speakers for organizing an informative and
impactful session. The event was successful in its objective of educating students about HIV/
AIDS, with the participants gaining valuable insights into the challenges posed by the disease
and the ongoing efforts to combat it.
The session not only highlighted the medical aspects of HIV/AIDS but also focused on the social
and psychological support that individuals living with HIV need. The collaborative efforts of
SSACS and the Red Ribbon Club were instrumental in ensuring the success of this awareness
initiative.
