Namchi, 05/06/23: An annual environment day celebration was observed at Sikkim Government College, Namchi today in the participation of the college’s principal, teaching and non-teaching staff, and more than 1100 students. In an attempt to raise awareness about environmental protection among the students and increase the ecosystem of its premises, the college annually observes environment day. Similarly, this year too, under the World Environment Day 2023 theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution” the participants collected all the plastic waste from the surrounding and saplings were planted afterward.
Message of principal at Environment Day 2023
At 10 am the principal of the college, Dr. Deepak Tiwari gave his brief talk on the importance of the environment with the participants. He encouraged the students to maintain the habit of keeping the environment clean by properly maintaining the waste and reducing their usage as well. As all the 19 different departments of the college from all three streams – arts, science, and commerce had been allocated different spots for plantation and the responsibility of maintenance of the same spot has also been given for the next year.
The Principal also informed the participants that the best-performing group will be honored with the award at a later date. The principal has also emphasized the importance of consistency in maintaining and nurturing the plants until they are grown enough and encouraged the participants to keep watching the allotted areas so that the time and efforts invested today shouldn’t go to waste.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Forest department, Namchi for providing saplings for the plantation. Upon completing the plantation and cleanliness drive light lunch was also served to all the students.
